Programme
The pressure to publish is greater than ever. Still, despite the
growing number of publications and digital channels open to researchers,
identifying the right publications is also increasingly difficult. This
seminar aims to enable all aspiring authors to ‘research their
research’, and provide an improved understanding of the modern
publishing market from one of the leading publishers in its field. It
will also, through expert commentary, equip attendees with the latest
information and trends in higher education, corporate learning, and
public sector research. This seminar and panel discussion will include
hot topics including elearning, journal metrics, and publishing ethics.
6:00pm - Emerald’s Guide to Getting Published
The Guide to Getting Published is based on Emerald’s experience
of working with the editors of almost 500 books and journals for
academics and practitioners, and provides insight to help new or
potential authors give their papers the best possible chance of
acceptance and publication. As part of its commitment to actively
supporting its authors – existing and future – the Guide is aimed at
helping authors progress successfully through the various stages, from
pre-submission of the manuscript, to revision and, finally, publication.
Specifically the session will include:
- Understanding the people involved throughout the publishing process
- Advice for authors on preparing and submitting articles
- Understanding the review process
- How you can publish in the top journals – understanding journal rankings
- How can you increase the profile of your research?
- Research methodology
- Utilizing social media and new technology
- Overview of resources available for authors.
7:00pm- Panel session: ‘The Future of Publishing’
Recent technological and social changes have challenged the nature of
the relationship between research and publishing and created new
possibilities for collaboration. In an open discussion, developments
such as Massive Open Online Courses (or ‘MOOCs’), digital scholarship,
and article-level metrics will be debated, and linked to how libraries
can facilitate knowledge sharing in these areas.
Areas for discussion include:
- ‘The future of publishing’ – digital scholarship, social media and elearning
- Developments in Open Access publishing
- Latest trends in Canadian research
- Journal rankings lists; traditional citation metrics (WOS /Scopus) vs. altmetrics
- Publishing ethics
- How these various factors translate to the role of the librarian
